Driving Historical Question
How did the policies of Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover affect the 1920s and lead to the Great Depression?
Lesson Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Hook/Accessing Prior Knowledge)
Write the lyrics “…Warren Harding, he does fine/Then it’s Calvin Coolidge next in line/And then in 1929/The market crashes and we find/It’s Herbert Hoover’s big debut/He gets the blame and loses too…” on the board. Play this clip from the Anamaniac’s President’s song. Ask students what they have learned from these lines of the song.
Vocabulary (Content Language Development)
Normalcy, Great Depression, Corruption, laissez-faire, Progressive, Espionage Act
Content Delivery (Method of Instruction)
Students will participate in a close-reading activity, where they will read through the same article three different times, then will come up with their own questions. This will lead into a discussion about the policies of the three presidents, and how it changed the era of the presidents.
Student Engagement (Critical Thinking & Student Activities)
Students will use the close reading activity to help build a three circle Venn diagram to discuss the policies of the three presidents. This will help the students to organize their ideas into a graphic organizer that compares and contrasts the presidents. After completing the diagram, students must write a short summary of each president's policies that was learned from the close reading.
Lesson Closure
At the conclusion of the lesson, we will go over the topics that the students put in their Venn diagrams, and see what students thought caused the 1920s to lead into the Great Depression.
Re-visit the Anamaniac’s song, and see what the students think of the lyrics after participating in the close reading.

Assessments (Formative & Summative)
Formative: Close reading activity discussion, which will allow students to participate by giving their questions up, and allow other students to discuss what they believe the answers are to them.
Summative: Completion of a three circle Venn diagram with a minimum of three points in the contrasting section, two in each of the partner comparisons, and one in the three section overlap. On the outside of the Venn Diagram, after its completion, the students will be expected to write a short paragraph summarizing what they learned about each President’s policies, and what happened during their administration as they learned from the close reading.

Accommodations for English Learners, Striving Readers and Students with Special Needs
EL- EL students will be allowed to use a dictionary that is Spanish-to-English to help with understanding the words used in the article. They will be given sentence frames to help them with coming up with their questions.
SR- The striving readers will be given more time whenever possible. Having the handouts on the desks prior to them arriving will allow them more time if needed.
SSN- I will make myself available to the students during the close reading to monitor their progress. They are allowed to ask questions, and will be given extra time on the Venn Diagram to complete it at home if necessary, along with the extra paragraphs to summarize.
